Cupping Therapy

might be trendy now, but it’s not new. It dates back to ancient  Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern, islamic cultures. One of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, describes how the ancient Egyptians used cupping therapy in 1,550 B.C.

Types of Hijama – Cupping Therapy:

Wet Cupping

Wet cupping is one of the most followed methods of cupping therapy where the therapist makes few small incisions over the body of the patient after removing the cup. The cup is re-applied to take out a very small quantity of blood. After the therapist is done with the procedure, he/she will apply an antibiotic and will do the dressing so that those incisions made during the procedure do not cause any infection.
It is said that wet cupping helps to remove toxins from the body in order to promote natural healing.

Massage Cupping

As the name itself reflects that in this method the cups are moving while performing the treatment. In order to ensure smooth movement of cups, the therapist would use some lubricant like oil infused with herbs. This helps to move the cups easily and also induces pleasurable sensation for the patient. sed

Dry Cupping

In dry cupping process, the therapist uses a vacuum on different parts of body to gather blood in those areas without having to make any incisions.

           What is Hijama ?

The word ‘Hijama’ in Arabic is derived from ‘hajim’ whose literal meaning is ‘sucking’. It’s a kind of therapy where harmful substances are removed from one’s body by doing a minor surgical procedure. It is also well known as ‘Cupping therapy’. It has got strong Islamic historical background as it is considered to be the ‘Sunnah’ of the Prophet Muhammad i.e. ‘the way of the prophet’, that’s the reason it is also known as Prophetic Medicine.
